The long hot summer days are slowly coming to an end. The air feels cooler, the temperatures soften, that can only mean that autumn has arrived! The summer months were filled with beach days, weekend trips through Andalusia, moragas (beach BBQs), and so much more. However, autumn means we can get the hiking boots out of the closet again and that it’s time for those delicious Andalusian stews. Let me tell you more about the best parts about Andalusia in Autumn!

Hiking Through Andalusia in Autumn
For hikers, autumn is one of the most rewarding seasons to explore Andalusia. The temperatures are cooler than in summer, the landscapes begin to take on golden and earthy colours, and the countryside feels particularly peaceful. One of the best places to experience Andalusia’s mountain scenery is Sierra de Grazalema Natural Park. This spectacular protected area is home to limestone mountains, deep gorges, forests and beautiful white villages. Andalusia in Autumn is an excellent time to explore its many trails, with routes offering everything from gentle walks to more challenging mountain hikes. The village of Grazalema itself is also a lovely place to stop for lunch after a day outdoors.
For a completely different experience, Doñana National Park is well worth considering. Rather than dramatic mountain scenery, Doñana offers an extraordinary mixture of wetlands, sand dunes, pine forests and open landscapes. Autumn is particularly interesting for nature lovers, as the park is an important stopping point for migratory birds. Depending on the route and access available, visitors may see flamingos, deer and a huge variety of birdlife. Exploring Doñana feels less like a traditional mountain hike and more like discovering one of Europe’s great wild landscapes.

For a more adventurous day out, Caminito del Rey is hard to beat. The famous walkway follows the walls of a spectacular gorge, with dramatic cliffs and reservoirs surrounding the route. Autumn offers comfortable conditions for experiencing this iconic Andalusian landscape. And for those looking for higher mountains, Sierra Nevada National Park offers a very different type of hiking. The higher peaks can already feel wintry later in the season, while lower-altitude trails provide beautiful views over the mountains and surrounding countryside.

Andalusian Highlights in The Golden Hour of the Year
What makes autumn special is the variety: in a single trip, you can hike through the misty mountains of Grazalema, watch migrating birds in the wetlands of Doñana, and finish the day with a traditional Andalusian meal in a nearby village. But this season isn’t only about hiking. It’s also a fantastic time to explore Andalusia’s cities and villages with the beautiful colour autumn gives to the surroundings.
Of course, historical cities like Granada, Cordoba and Seville become spectacular this time of the year. Here you can still find the real Andalusian tapeo, going from bar to bar having a few tapas. Which basically means getting a €1 beer with a complementary tapa. This is your chance to immerse yourself completely in the Andalusian lifestyle!
But I want to give you two hidden gems that are truly special and a unique opportunity to experience the authentic Andalusia left by the wealthy farmers of the region. One of them is called Priego de Cordoba. It’s a beautiful town still filled with palaces and beautiful Andalusian courtyards. The other hidden gem is Osuna. Also filled with history, mesmerising architecture in the streets and, most importantly El Coto las Canteras. The quarry was already being exploited by the Turdetans, a pre-Roman people of southern Iberia, and its use continued under the Romans and later Islamic and Christian rulers. And like these, there are so many more hidden gems in Andalusia, all ready to be discovered by you!

Antumn Flavours
After a day of walking and exploring, Andalusia’s autumn food is just as appealing as its scenery. Autumn is a wonderful time to discover the warmer, more traditional side of Andalusian cuisine. As the temperatures cool, dishes such as migas, hearty stews, and mushrooms cooked with garlic and olive oil become especially appealing after a day outdoors.
The season also brings plenty of local produce, from castañas (roasted chestnuts) and membrillo (quince) to freshly harvested olives and olive oil. And after a day of hiking or exploring a white village, there is perhaps no better way to enjoy Andalusia than by going for tapas from bar to bar, trying different seasonal dishes and soaking up the lively atmosphere.
