Stepping Back in Time: A Short History of this Country Home

One of the first things you feel when arriving at this property is that you can finally breathe. This Country Home in Ronda gives you an inexplicable feeling of arriving home. Perhaps it is because of all of the history the property carries with it. Located at the foot of the old Roman town of Acinipo, history surrounds you from the second you start driving towards the house. This leads us to believe that, although the exact history of the house remains somewhat of a mystery, it is very likely that the property was built on the remains of a Roman settlement.

Just imagine that for a second. You could be living surrounded by land that was once inhabited by the Romans. Not only is it a very special feature of the home, but it also comes with a bonus! Wherever the Romans settled, they made sure to have good land for the crops. This means that all the land surrounding you property would be incredibly fertile! But the stories don’t stop with the Romans.

Over the years, the property has had several different lives. It was briefly used as a convent and later became a guest house. For 20 years, it was also home to an artist, who had his very own atelier in the house, right next to the swimming pool. Imagine waking up every morning surrounded by the Andalusian countryside, with endless views and the peace and quiet to let your creativity flow. You could keep the artistic history alive and create your own studio in the room that used to be the atelier. Or perhaps you could turn it into a luxurious spa next to the swimming pool? A gym? A relaxed lounge? An indoor-outdoor cocktail bar for entertaining friends and family? The possibilities really are endless. What would you do with it?

Interior Charm You Simply Can’t Recreate

One of the biggest perks of buying a historic home is that you get something that simply cannot be recreated. You can build a new house, add beautiful finishes or design the perfect layout. But you can’t manufacture hundreds of years of history and character. And this house has plenty of both.

From the moment you arrive, you are welcomed by a charming pebbled courtyard that immediately reminds you that you are in the heart of the beautiful Andalusian countryside. It is authentic, warm and full of personality. Step inside, and the charm continues. Wooden doors. Authentic windows with shutters. Beautiful arches. Thick stone walls. Everywhere you look, there is another detail that reminds you that this is not just any home.

What I particularly love is the mix of influences. There are hints of Roman architecture combined with traditional Andalusian features, creating a home that feels completely unique. Sometimes, walking through the house almost feels like walking through a museum. The thick stone walls have been beautifully preserved during the renovation, something that is very typical of the Ronda area and its rich history.

And then there are the arches. These are what make the home so charming and special. It’s what adds the unique touch to your home, what tells the story of the property and what will keep you mesmerised every day. But, let me tell you, the terracota floors is the perfect finishing touch. This is exactly the combined architecture I was talking about. For me, terracotta floors are one of those details that immediately bring a sense of warmth into a home. They are rustic, authentic and cosy. They remind you that you are in the countryside of Andalusia and living your authentic Andalusian lifestyle.

Historic Andalusian country property

And that is exactly what makes this Country Home in Ronda so special. But the charm doesn’t stop there. Wooden beam ceilings, French balconies, and modern touches all work together to create a home that feels both historic and comfortable. One of my favourite spaces has to be the winter terrace. It is the perfect example of how you can update a historic home while respecting its original character. Floor-to-ceiling windows fill the space with natural light and create a beautiful connection between the interior and exterior. And that brings me to one of the most exciting things about this property…

The Possibilities to Make It Your Own

From Roman history and artistic inspiration to endless possibilities for creating a truly luxurious country home, this is one of those properties where you can really let your imagination run wild. Around 20 years ago, the current owner renovated the entire house, turning it into the beautiful home it is today. But as with every home, you might have your own ideas. Maybe you want to update certain areas. Maybe you want to improve the comfort and adapt it to modern living standards. Or perhaps you have a completely different vision for how you would use the space. And the good news? There is so much potential.

The main house currently has two very large en-suite bedrooms. Depending on your needs and vision, there could be the possibility to redesign the layout and create three or even four bedrooms. Then there is the kitchen and dining area. If you don’t necessarily need such a large formal dining room but dream of a big, welcoming family kitchen, I have an idea! Why not rethink the space and create a kitchen-dining area that really becomes the heart of the home? Open the doors towards the terrace, create enough space for everyone to gather around a table, and design the kind of kitchen where family and friends naturally come together. That, for me, would create such a lovely flow through the house.

Another idea that could take this property to an even higher level of luxury would be to improve the connection between the interior and exterior. The winter terrace already shows exactly how beautiful this can be. Imagine adding more floor-to-ceiling windows in selected areas of the house, flooding the rooms with natural sunlight. You’ll be able to wake up from the rays of sun warming up your face, have morning coffees in your new large family kitchen while enjoying the morning sun beaming through your windows. But not only is this perfect for natural sunlight. You could use it to give yourself easier access to the terraces and gardens. And, of course, large windows equals more opportunities to enjoy those incredible views. Why keep the beautiful Andalusian landscape outside when you can make it your daily backdrop?
