Ronda: A Town Oozing with History

When you think of Spain, which is the first location that comes to mind? You might be thinking of the coast of Barcelona, Madrid, or the Costa del Sol. And you’re right to think of beautiful beaches, mesmerising coastal towns, and a rich coastal culture with a sparkling, diamond like Mediterranean Sea. However, inland Andalusia is often overlooked. Ronda, for example, is less than an hour from the coast and offers breathtaking views across the countryside and spectacular mountain sceneries. It’s the unspoilt nature and serenity that make the Andalusian countryside truly one of a kind. Read more about luxury country living in Ronda here.

Ronda has something particularly special to offer, too. About 20 minutes from the city, you’ll find the Acinipo, a remarkable archaeological site featuring the well-preserved remains of the ancient Roman city. The first origins, from the Neolithic period, 5000 years ago! However, most famously known for its Roman importance, dating back to more than 2.000 years ago! It is especially famous for its incredibly well preserved Roman theatre. The site extends all the way into the countryside, featuring the typical Roman stone walls alongside the road, leading to beautiful places.

At the foot of Acinipo stands a unique Spanish cortijo, lovingly restored. The history of this charming Andalusian cortijo in Ronda even dates back to Roman times. Later, it was briefly used as a convent, and for the last 35 years, it has been a private home filled with laughter and love. Aren’t we excited to share with you that it now belongs to the Villas & Fincas Luxury Country Gems!

The Perfect Andalusian Cortijo for Your Farmer’s Lifestyle

There is always a reason why ancient populations chose to build their cities in particular locations. In the case of Ronda, one of those reasons was the land. The area around Ronda is incredibly fertile and has been used for farming for thousands of years.

About 2,000 years ago, vineyards surrounded the ancient city of Acinipo. Once, the fields were filled with vine stocks, and later in history the lands were covered in olive trees. Towards the end of the 20th century, the region’s old tradition of winemaking began to make a comeback, and vineyards once again became part of the landscape. Today, we see a harmonious combination of both vines and olive trees. Resulting in having over 15 successful wineries in Ronda and delicious boutique olive oils!

Fear not! Wine and olives are not the only thing that grows here. Do you prefer to keep it simple and just grow some tomatoes? Then this charming Andalusian cortijo in Ronda is an even better match for you. It is set right in the middle of this fertile countryside, making it an ideal place for anyone who enjoys the idea of growing their own food. You could plant all kinds of fruit and vegetables, and if you really wanted to embrace the farming lifestyle, you could even keep a few chickens. Since this beautiful Andalusian cortijo in Ronda has such a large plot, you can even decide to plant your own vineyard and become the next successful producer in Ronda!

So, perhaps the ancient Romans were onto something. This is a place where you can enjoy the pleasures of living from the land, while still having all the comforts of a stylish Andalusian home.

Three Pillars: Belonging, Purpose and Wellness

Luxury tends to be more appealing nowadays if it comes hand in hand with one of the three pillars: belonging, purpose and wellness. Luxury is not necessarily about only having possessions anymore, but about something personal, something meaningful. This unique Andalusian cortijo in Ronda ticks all the boxes.

Wellness

Living in a busy city can sometimes feel overwhelming. More and more people are moving to the south of Spain in search of privacy, peace and a place to recharge. Wellness is becoming an increasingly important part of our lives, especially when you have a high-paced job & lifestyle. You can already imagine how being surrounded by nothing but mountains, plants, trees, water and animals might bring a sense of serenity. This beautiful Andalusian cortijo offers countless opportunities to slow down and reconnect with yourself, your family and friends, and nature.

Picture the romantic pathway leading to the swimming pool, the original Roman arches surrounding it… Or the handmade terracotta tiles running throughout the house. The property has always been a special one, thanks to its proximity to Ronda and its incredible views. Its old, thick walls, cloister, arches and cobbled courtyard ooze history and Andalusian charm. If you are looking for a home with real Andalusian history, look no further!

Purpose

This property has so much potential. As I mentioned earlier, the land is incredibly fertile and perfect for farming. Whether you love farming or just like the perks of farming, it is a wonderful project to take on. Doesn’t it sound like a dream to eat your own freshly grown fruit and vegetables, keep your own animals and perhaps even produce your own wine?

And even if farming isn’t really your thing, and you have never picked up a shovel in your life, Ronda is home to plenty of people who know the land inside out. They all have a genuine passion for the countryside they, and their ancestors, have grown up in. You don’t necessarily have to do everything yourself. There are people who will wholeheartedly help you make the most of the land while you enjoy the results.

It’s a chance to live from your land, become a little more self-sufficient. You’re taking care of yourself while taking care of the environment. That sounds like a pretty big yes to me.

Belonging

When it comes to belonging, there is so much I could say. The cortijo and the surrounding area simply ooze history. You’re in a place that you can make completely your own, while still feeling connected to something much older: the land, the house and the centuries of Andalusian essence that came before us.

Perhaps that’s what makes it so special. It’s about going back to the basics without having to give up your luxuries. About enjoying a glass of wine in complete silence while looking out over the Andalusian countryside. Or whilst taking in the most spectacular night sky you have ever seen in your entire life! It’s about immersing yourself in a culture that is warm, friendly and incredibly welcoming. The Andalusians have “corazones de oro”, golden hearts.

Here, you can have your own private space, deeply connected to nature and the local culture. And before you know it, you’ll start feeling at home in the Spanish way of life. You’ll have lunch and dinner a little later. You don’t have to plan everything three months in advance anymore. You’ll start taking things as they come and living more from day to day.

Maybe that’s the real luxury this cortijo offers: having the freedom to slow down and simply enjoy where you are”.
