The main house was built by the Countess of Guadalevin, Carmen Abela (1849-1924 ) , a noblewoman with great fortunes in those days. The style of the building is a mixture of neoclassical and fine andalusian style, dating from the beginning of the century (1900).
The unique gardens which surround the mainhouse where designed and executed by the renowned French architect J.N. Forestier (also designed the gardens of “Casa del Rey Moro” in Ronda, with a plenitude of fountains, small waterfalls and rivers. One fountain specially worth mentioning is the unique Sphinx fountain locally known as “ La Muñeca “ which was designed and executed by famous sculptor Enrique Marín Higuera (1873-1951). The 3,50m x 2,10m big sculpture shows a woman with a lion’s body and butterfly wings with water coming out of her mouth. The gardens comprise a great variety of trees ranging from Magnolia and Khaki trees to palm trees and a huge and extremely rare “Pinsapo”-tree (a pine tree) growing on the Southside of the house. One of the main building materials used for the construction and ornamentation of the fountains, bridges and small grottos are stalactites and stalagmites which then were taken from nearby caves, (a fact which nowadays would be unthinkable), adding to the uniqueness of the fountains and waterfalls and giving the gardens their natural beauty.
