Casares Walk, Rural Andalucia

Exploring Casares village Andalucia

Casares Village walk, province of Andalucia

Casares, 14 km inland, in between Estepona and Sotogrande, is one of the most beautiful white villages in Andalusia. The white houses stacked to the tremendous rock, make the village look like an eagle nest. We'll take you on a tour through the village. Following the main road above the village you can park your car near Restaurant Mi Cortijo. Follow the signs Casares Hotel Rural to find your way down to the main square. Passing the hotel keep following calle Copera down. Turn left at the end and you'll see the square in front of you. Have a coffee in one of the bars and enjoy village life for a moment. If you arrive at Spanish breakfast time we can recommend to stop for 'Torta Frita' (fried pieces of bread dough with honey) in Mesón Los Claveles, just behind the church. The church itself is worth a visit but only to admire the 'Virgen del Rosario' the villages Virgen that protects Casares' inhabitants and their crops.
Facing the church you can proceed your walk going left up the hill. It is a stiff climb up the hill, passing the ayuntamiento (town hall), a small archaeological museum and finally reaching the ruins of the Moorish castle and the church on the top. Climbing the stairs behind the church you literally find yourselves on top of the world. The stunning views over the sea, the rock of Gibraltar and the African coast will take your breath away. You walk down again, crossing the square, leaving the church behind you. Follow the narrow streets down and you cannot end up in a different place then the main square again.
The less brave ones may want to skip the hill climb and proceed their village walk taking a right turn on the main square (facing the church), down through calle Carrera. You'll pass another square and then on your left hand side you'll find the house in which Blas Infante, 'the founder' of Andalusia, was born. It now contains a small museum and the tourist office.
Find your way back to your car by taking calle Fuente (opposite the heladeria) from the main square. Stop at the local butcher (no. 32) for the most delicious home made chorizo. Where calle Fuente turns right you follow the stairs up under an arch. Keep going up, turn right at the Hotel and follow the road up to the car park.
For those who are staying for lunch in one of the local restaurants on the square, or on the top road we recommend the 'Gazpacho Casareño' a warm abundantly filled tomato-vegetable soup or one of the 'chivo'-plates (baby goat). Enjoy!
